Phishers were having a field day with Facebook and Twitter on Thursday. A new phishing scam hit Facebook users that, like others in recent weeks, sends them to a Web site which steals their log-in information and also secretly downloads malware onto computers when they visit the malicious Web site in what is known as a "drive-by download."

Meanwhile, Twitter users were getting messages from new followers that were posting links to a fake Twitter site with "tvvitter" in the tiny URL, Graham Cluley of Sophos wrote in his blog. His blog has a video of the phishing attack in action. Twitter representatives did not immediately respond to e-mails seeking comment.

In the Facebook attack, messages circulated with a subject line of "Hello" and a prompt to check out "areps.at" or other URLs ending in ".at".

The URLS, before being blocked, directed the visitor to a fake Facebook page. If you logged in to the site, it would steal your e-mail and password, log you into Facebook, automatically change your password, and send the same message to all your Facebook friends, according to the All Facebook blog.

The malicious Web sites also spread the Koobface worm and install the Trojan.BHO, among other malware, onto unsuspecting computers, according to a CNET News test using Internet Explorer. But the URLs were blocked by Firefox and flagged as a "Web Forgery" as of 9:50 a.m. PDT.

"Whoever is behind the scam has been steadily amassing a large number of e-mail addresses and passwords over the past few weeks," the blog says. "Some days as much as three scams will spread throughout the site (possibly even more). Facebook rapidly shuts down all references to the site but by then the scam has spread to thousands of users."

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said: "The impact of this attack or the previous ones are not widespread and only impacted a tiny fraction of a percent of users. We've been updating our monitoring systems with information gleaned from the previous attacks so that each new attack is detected more quickly."

The site has blocked links to the new phishing sites from being shared on Facebook, added them to the block lists of the major browsers, and is working with partners to have the sites taken down completely, he said. Facebook also is cleaning up phony messages and wall posts and resetting the passwords of affected users.

Other safe computing tips from Facebook:

--Use unique logins and passwords for each of the Web sites you use.
--Check to see that you're logging in from a legitimate Facebook page with the facebook.com domain.

--It is important that impacted users reset all accounts (not just Facebook) that use the same credentials. We believe the bad guys here are phishing an account and then trying those credentials on webmail providers. So, for example, if a user is compromised on Facebook and has the same login and password for their Gmail, the attacker may be able to intercept the Facebook password reset and compromise the account again in the future. This is one of the reasons why people need unique passwords for their online accounts.

Separately, some Facebook users reported difficulty accessing the site on Thursday morning. It was unclear whether the connectivity issues were related to the phishing scam.

Scammers are using compromised Twitter accounts to prey on suspecting victims, security firm Sophos said today. According to Sophos, compromised Twitter accounts are sending out tweets and direct messages to followers, urging them to sign up for a site that will help them make money. One such message from an account reads, "I made $888 today check out how I made it." The message is followed by a link to a malicious site.

According to Sophos, the dollar amount in the tweets and messages can vary. Sophos said that when people click on the included link, they are brought to a site that claims to help single mothers and teenagers make "thousands of dollars" each day. However, those who fall prey to the scam will only "end up out of pocket" if they sign up, Sophos said.


As Barracuda Networks revealed back in February at the RSA security conference, Twitter has proven appealing to scammers because of its functionality both as a social network and search engine. And the worst part is, many of the site's malicious accounts are more popular than you might think.

Barracuda pointed to one Twitter account at the time that had 445 followers recently, even though it directed people to hosted shareware containing malware and Trojans. What's more, the company said at the conference that it found in its research of Twitter that just 43 percent of users were considered legitimate. The remaining 57 percent of users were "questionable."

Over a five-month period, Barracuda said at the time, it had found 34,627 samples of malware in search engines and on Twitter. According to the research firm, Twitter accounted for 8 percent of that total.

"It's interesting, because we've been doing this work for probably nine months...now, and the last time we really examined it and looked back on this, it charted very differently," Barracuda Chief Research Officer Paul Judge said back in February. "About 69 percent of the malware that we found was on Google at the time, only 1 percent was on Twitter."

But Twitter hasn't sat still. The social network last year launched a filtering service that aims at stopping malicious links from being included in direct messages. The company's link-shortening service, t.co, also helps to safeguard users from malicious links.

According to Sophos, keeping yourself safe from the latest threat is quite simple: don't click on the link in the direct message or tweet. Users who have had their accounts compromised should reset their passwords. Sophos also recommends those folks scan their computers for malware.

Google's Android easily dominated the worldwide smartphone OS market in the second quarter, research firm Canalys has found.

During the quarter, 107.7 million smartphones shipped worldwide, growing 73 percent year over year. According to the research firm, 39.8 million smartphone units shipped in the Asia-Pacific region, and 35 million units were released in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. In the Americas, 32.9 million smartphone units were shipped.

Canalys, which analyzes shipments in 56 countries around the world, said that Android led the way in 35 of them, helping it to secure 48 percent market share during the quarter. Android shipments during the period hit 51.9 million, representing 379 percent growth compared with the second quarter of 2010. Android is especially popular in South Korea, where it captured 85 percent market share. In Taiwan, the platform snagged 71 percent share.

Android's growth has been nothing short of astounding. In January, Canalys announced Android's fourth-quarter performance, saying that it captured 32.9 percent market share, thanks to shipments of 33.3 million units. At the time, the research firm said that Android shipments were up 615.1 percent.
The end of 2010 also brought Symbian to the second spot in unit shipments, nabbing 30.6 percent share on 31 million unit shipments. But in just two short quarters, Symbian is no longer hanging on to that spot. Thanks to increasingly strong iPhone sales, Apple's iOS platform scored the second-place slot during the second quarter, earning 19 percent market share on 20.3 million iPhone sales. In addition, Canalys found that Samsung moved ahead of Nokia in vendor rankings to secure the spot behind Apple. Samsung shipped 17 million smartphone units during the quarter, Canalys said.

Although things went well for some companies in the mobile market last quarter, two companies--Research In Motion and Microsoft--struggled. According to Canalys, RIM's worldwide smartphone shipments were up 11 percent in the second quarter, but in North America, they were down 33 percent, leading it to secure just 12 percent market share.

Microsoft arguably had the worst quarter, though. According to Canalys, less than 1.5 million Windows Phone 7-based smartphones shipped during the period, earning the platform just 1 percent market share. Shipments were down 52 percent year over year.

For Microsoft, earning more market share will require the help of Nokia. Earlier this year, the companies signed a pact that will see Windows Phone become the "principal" operating system in Nokia handsets. Although the companies haven't said for sure when the first smartphone will launch, Canalys expects a "mid-to-late Q4" launch. Still, Canalys said, "it will be much longer before a portfolio of Nokia Windows Phone smartphones drives volumes."

Meanwhile, Canalys sees good times ahead for Apple. With the rumored iPhone 5 launching at some point in the third quarter, Canalys said, the iPhone maker's "position will grow even stronger in the second half of the year.

With pent-up demand for the iPhone 5, the new phone could double Apple's market share, according to an investor's report released yesterday by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

Surveying a sampling of 216 mobile phone users, Munster found huge demand for the iPhone 5 among both current iPhone users and those who own other smartphones.Looking at all those surveyed, 29 percent currently own iPhones and 17 percent have an Android phone, leaving 28 percent with a BlackBerry and the rest with other types of phones.

Among existing iPhone owners, 94 percent of those surveyed expect to buy another iPhone, leaving only 6 percent eyeing an Android device. But among current Android smartphone users, 42 percent said they're likely to switch to the iPhone.Among Verizon subscribers in general who don't presently own an iPhone, 55 percent expect to buy one, with 74 percent specifically waiting for the iPhone 5. That number compares with 53 percent of AT&T customers specifically awaiting the next model iPhone.

In light of the demand, Munster believes the iPhone 5 may push Verizon's numbers even higher than the 3.8 million iPhones that Piper Jaffray is estimating the carrier will sell in the September quarter. And the overall iPhone unit estimate of 22 million for the quarter may also "prove to be conservative.

As the launch of its next-generation iPhone handset nears, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple is gearing up to ship a record amount of iPhones to close out the 2011 year with a bang. Apple has been placing huge orders for the necessary components to make the next iPhone, and with the hype and media frenzy continuing to develop at full steam the product is expected to sell very well.
WSJ cited sources inside of Apple's supply chain that the company is being very aggressive with its build strategies for the new iPhone, and has directed its manufacturers to expect orders totaling 25 million units over the coming months. The report claims that unless Foxconn can improve its yields, Apple will be unable to meet such a lofty goal. Insiders have claimed that the iPhone 5 is both "complicated" and "difficult to assemble".
The report also rumored that the next iPhone will include new models of a wireless baseband chip developed by Qualcomm, which will be replacing the iPhone 4's chips which were provided by Infineon. It's been widely suspected that Apple will be moving to a "world phone" chipset with the next iPhone, enabling use on both GSM and CDMA networks across the globe and simplifying the number of models that Apple needs to develop. The WSJ report didn't provide any indication if this Qualcomm chip would be "world phone" capable.
The report also stated that the iPhone 5 will be both lighter and thinner than the iPhone 4, but didn't commit to any speculation regarding a change in design. Just a couple of weeks ago ThisIsMyNext claimed that the iPhone 5 would be a radical design departure from the iPhone 4, and other recent rumors have claimed that the love for the iPhone 4's design is all but gone from the company's executive team.
If the report is accurate, then Apple's large component orders would put the iPhone 5 on track to hit its rumored third-quarter release date. Apparently, suppliers have been quoted as planning to ship their final hardware to Foxconn no later than early August so that final assembly of the handsets can begin. Apple shipped more than 18 million iPhones in its last quarter, so a 25 million unit prediction would indicate that Cupertino expects the iPhone 5 to be a blockbuster.
Apple had no comment on the report, and has kept tight-lipped regarding the next iPhone handset. As the days tick off to September, expect the rumor mill to keep turning.
